Why travellers come to Kazbegi

Kazbegi and Stepantsminda — the Caucasus high-country postcard.

The village of Stepantsminda (still widely called Kazbegi — the old name) sits at 1,740 m in the Tergi valley, directly beneath the 5,047 m peak of Mount Kazbek and 7 km from the Russian border. The village itself is small, but it’s the jumping-off point for the Caucasus: the Gergeti Trinity Church on a spur above the village is one of Georgia’s most-photographed sites, and the hiking into the Tergi gorge and toward the Gergeti glacier is world-class.

The transfer itself — don’t underestimate the road

Kazbegi is roughly 150 km north of Tbilisi. Travel time is 3 to 3.5 hours under normal conditions — longer than the distance suggests because the final third of the drive is alpine switchbacks on the Jvari Pass (2,379 m). Winter conditions can extend the trip by an hour; summer Sunday traffic adds 30 minutes. Our drivers know the road well, check pass status before departure, and carry snow chains year-round for weather windows.

Day trip vs. overnight

Most first-time visitors do Kazbegi as a day trip from Tbilisi — leave 8 AM, arrive 11 AM, spend 4 hours at the monastery and the village, back in Tbilisi by 7 PM. Fixed-price round-trip in a Sedan runs around €150; Minivan for a family of 5 runs about €220. For travellers spending more than a day (recommended — there’s a lifetime of hiking around Kazbek), we drop you at the guesthouse and pick you up at an agreed date. The TBS-to-Kazbegi direct route skips Tbilisi entirely and is popular with travellers arriving on early-morning flights.

Combined itineraries

Kazbegi pairs naturally with Gudauri (45 min south on the same highway). The combined day trip — Tbilisi to Gudauri gondola ride to Kazbegi to Ananuri fortress back to Tbilisi — is a long 11-hour day but covers every signature spot on the Military Highway.
