Sighnaghi — the walled hilltop town at the heart of Georgian wine country.

Sighnaghi sits on a ridge above the Alazani Valley in Kakheti, Georgia’s principal wine region. Walled, cobblestoned and compact (you can walk from one gate to the other in fifteen minutes), the old town has been carefully restored without being turned into a theme park — small guesthouses, a handful of family-run wineries inside the walls, and an observation balcony that reads east across 30 kilometres of vineyard to the snow line of the Caucasus.

The transfer from Tbilisi

Sighnaghi is 110 km east of Tbilisi. Travel time is 90 minutes to 2 hours on good road — a straightforward drive through Sagarejo and Gurjaani. Most visitors combine Sighnaghi with a Telavi stop (the other major Kakhetian town, 45 minutes north) and at least one working winery — the combined route is priced on the widget as a custom Kakheti day trip.

What to do once you’re there

The walk along the city walls is the defining Sighnaghi experience — roughly 4 km round-trip, with lookout towers and snack stops along the way. The Bodbe Monastery (a 10-minute drive from town) is where Saint Nino is buried and remains an active convent. For wine: Pheasant’s Tears, Okro’s, and several smaller family wineries inside the city walls offer tastings without advance booking. Book Okro’s for lunch if you can — the kitchen does supra-style tables with traditional Kakhetian dishes.

Wine-tasting logistics

Some travellers ask whether they can drive themselves to Kakheti and taste wine. Georgia’s alcohol-tolerance laws are zero for drivers; we strongly recommend booking a driver for any winery day. A Sedan with our driver running a Kakheti tasting loop (Tbilisi → Telavi wineries → Sighnaghi → back) is €200–250 depending on the stops — cheaper than the combined cost of fines and a single crash.
