Mestia and Upper Svaneti — a four-hour transfer into the medieval Caucasus.

Mestia is the administrative centre of Upper Svaneti (Zemo Svaneti) — a high alpine region in the north-west of Georgia, historically one of the most isolated inhabited zones in Europe. The Svan people have lived here for at least 2,500 years, building the defensive stone tower-houses (koshki) that now make the region a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mestia itself sits at 1,500 m; the village of Ushguli 50 km further up the valley sits at 2,100 m and is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe.

Which airport to fly into for Svaneti

Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) is by a considerable margin the most sensible arrival point for Svaneti. The KUT to Mestia transfer runs roughly 4 hours through the Enguri valley, past the Enguri dam and reservoir, and up into the Svan valleys. Travellers flying into Tbilisi for Svaneti face an 8-hour land transfer — we run it if asked, but we flag the option to fly into Kutaisi instead when possible.

Road conditions and seasonal access

The road to Mestia is fully paved and passable year-round. The onward road from Mestia to Ushguli (a further 45 km) is rough in places — usable in summer by any vehicle, requiring a 4×4 or chains in winter. For Ushguli day trips from Mestia, our local partner operates 4×4 vehicles priced separately. The standard transfer vehicles (Sedan, Minivan) handle Mestia itself all year.

What to plan for once you arrive

Mestia is not a one-night stop. Plan at least three full days — the Koruldi Lakes hike (6 hours, 1,000 m elevation gain), the drive to Ushguli (1 day minimum, ideally overnight), the Mestia Museum of History and Ethnography (2 hours, worth it), and simply walking between the koshki towers of the old village. In winter, Mestia is also a quiet ski destination — Hatsvali and Tetnuldi resorts sit 15 minutes from town with far fewer crowds than Gudauri.
